Who is Aguero’s perfect replacement ?

Erling Haaland is the ‘perfect candidate’ to replace departing Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero.

That’s according to former City midfielder Trevor Sinclair, who says the Premier League will be ‘sad’ to see the legendary striker leave.

Aguero is the fourth highest goalscorer in Premier League history

Aguero will end his ten-year association with Man City when his contract expires at the end of the season, the club announced on Monday evening.

He has scored 181 goals in 271 Premier League matches and netted one of the division’s most iconic goals to win City a dramatic top-flight crown in 2012.

Already talk has moved on to who City and their billionaire owners will bring to the club as a replacement for their all-time record goalscorer.

And Sinclair, who played for City between 2003 and 2007, believes Borussia Dortmund goal machine Haaland is the ideal replacement for Aguero.

He told talkSPORT: “Haaland gets involved in a minimal way in the build-up, which is almost what City like.

“A little bit of one and two-touch, playing the way you’re facing, going through the lines, then you’re getting those little slip balls down the side of the box or a pull back.

“It seems like Haaland with his rise over the last couple of years would be the perfect candidate for me.

“With his connection with his dad [Alf-Inge, who played for Man City], the style of football, he would be my choice.”

Haaland has also been linked to Real Madrid

Haaland has been linked with Europe’s top clubs having scored 34 goals in 36 Bundesliga matches since joining Borussia Dortmund last year.

The German giants have reportedly stuck a £150million price tag on the 20-year-old, who could force through a move if the club fail to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Meanwhile, talkSPORT has been told Aguero is set to make Barcelona or Paris Saint-Germain his next move, with the European giants ‘most likely’ to sign the 32-year-old as a free agent this season.

That’s according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, who joined Tuesday’s White and Jordan show to offer the latest news on Aguero’s future.

“I think there are two clubs at the moment with good chances, they are talking with people close to Aguero, and I’m talking about Barcelona and Paris Saint-German.

“Barcelona have a new board, so let’s see what happens right now with the manager and the board if they will decide to go for Sergio, but for sure they have an interest in Aguero.

“Also, let’s see what happens with Messi. They are such good friendsand that’s why we have to keep and eye on Barcelona.

Could Aguero and Messi be in the same club side for the first time this summer?

“And also Paris Saint-Germain are the other club, because they are considering to move for a new striker.

“If Mauro Icardi will leave the club, Aguero could be an opportunity.

“So there are two clubs, but anything can happen when you have this kind of free agent on the market available.”

Sinclair continued to pay tribute to the Argentina striker on talkSPORT, and hailed him as one of the most important players in Man City’s history.

“For me, Aguero’s been the most important because strikers are the most important players these days,” added the ex-City ace.

“The fact that they’ve already stated they’re going to build a statue for Sergio Aguero, that sounds like that everyone’s happy with the deal.

“He’s happy to leave and go to pastures new and the football club are quite happy for him to do that. They’re not going to stand in his way.

Aguero has struggled to stay fit for large parts of the 2020/21 season

“It’s a great tribute for him and his efforts at the football club. It’s a massive pair of boots to fill for someone.

“They’ve done well without almost a striker this season at times, but I really do feel they’ll be bringing someone in and it’ll be a really big name.

“Just looking at where he would go, you’ve got the Argentinian connection with [Lionel] Messi – does that mean Messi is going to stay at Barcelona?

“Also, you look at [Mauricio] Pochettino, an Argentinian, at PSG. Those two clubs would be favourites to take him on board.

“He is 33 years old [in June], so his powers are starting to dwindle a little bit, but I’m sure he’s still got a spring in his step.

“After having a year off, he’s probably still got a little bit of football to give.”
